Although freelancers today are normally associated with designers, writers, programmers, photographers or illustrators; a few centuries ago the word FREELANCER had a whole other meaning. Back then mercenary knights and assasins were soldiers for hire. Named for their special services for killing and protecting. They carried a pole and a freedom they had in whom they fight for. Though a lance is no longer required, today freelancer does share one thing in common with those knights that is the freedom to choose.

It is a freedom to be your own boss. To select what you want to do and to be able to execute your work in your own style and timing. This is what draws so many people to a career of freelancing. As one freelancer to the other, i wish you all for the best of luck in your career and search.

Well here we are again, the start of another calender year, a time for both reflection and for future gazing. This is the time I come up with 'the Plan' for the year ahead in Paper People. It has been a really useful exercise something I encourage everyone to do, if you don't do so already. Its nothing revolutionary just laying out goals and ideas; personally, professionally and of course financially, taking stock and setting an agenda of sorts for the upcoming year.

Most of it is pretty basic but its good to put it down on your Paper People Organizer too not just to have a mindful of scrambled unfocused thoughts. A good dose of the healthy helpy-selfy. I have found it to be most useful both looking forward and looking back at the previous years objectives. Of course its nothing rigid; I am flexible and open to ever changing patterns as is evident in recent happenings but if you are honest with yourself and what may and may not be attainable it can help manage and achieve the dreams and realities that you ever wished for.

This years plan is yet to be written; maybe because I have spent so much time at the keyboard over the last few months working on the my blog http://www.myspace.com/papeogallery and needed to take a break from the typing to see where all this has led and where it may be going. There isn't much changes as compare to this Paper People website but i've included some personal photos there.I have to say to those of you who haven't yet jumped in and got your own up and going, it requires a lot of time and work especially if you are a daily home contributor you know what i mean. Job! To be honest a lot of time that should perhaps be spent on new designs are exploited on the blog. A thousand apologies to my loyal friends and customer. I have posted some of the new designs here, there are a total of 30 new designs but i listed 8 here to show you all that i'm not bullsh*tting. At least there's proof mah! So here we are back to rambling, time to work on some more of my own specifics for the year ahead.

Don't worry I won't be sharing all the hopes, dreams and indeed realities in our website but we are back and open for business so hang on, here's hoping its a wild and exciting ride ! Be Prepared for more "terror" designs coming in your way!

XOXO

Does it really matter? Most of us feel that products which are imported from other countries are of higher quality and more prestigious than the ones our locals have painstakingly produce themselves. Before I begin, let me inform you that I am not trying to brainwash you into boycotting imported brands nor am I trying to contravene the government vision in getting more foreign talents to work here in Singapore. It is already demonstrated here via the escapee Mas Selamat. The complacency and self negligence has smeared the brand name for the security system of Singapore. Are we to blame? Well some might say that our government is not doing their best from this episode. For whatever reason it might be, I feel that we have been too dependent on the government protection. For us, life just goes on and tra-la-la.

Take for instance our fascination & blind mimic of our favourite Hollywood celebrities in their latest fashion gear. If it is expensive, we will find ourselves a good excuse and buy them. Be it a necklace, a bag or a silly little hanky that cost nearly a thousand bucks. I called it self indulgence. This instant gratification is only instantaneous. But what about our local talents? Who will they rely on if not for their own people to believe them? Where would entrepreneurship be for the future of Singapore? We see the food industries in Singapore boom at an exponential rate but is it really enough for us to categories our own talents to a higher level and be identified on the large scale or of an international market? It is very alarming! Do we all need to learn how to cook and do nice authentic dishes to be an entrepeneur?

What I feel that most of us are unaware of the lack of support for our local products. We are still unaware of the consequences that will affect our own economy and future talents. There are a extensive range of products to cater to almost all occasion from fashion to furniture, stationeries to beauty products and music but yet our consumerism is driven by the ravenousness of the media coverage. The local talent here has progressed towards the next level that they deserved a shot for wider exposure. They really do. But when comes to a topic on whether they could earn a living like those international company or brands, that somewhat deterred people who have so much talent in design but unable to make use of their interest for life. They end up working for somebody else instead. Will they ever be appreciated? Working long hours without a break or far more worst, no overtime pay. It all depend on luck.

Only those who have the financial capability to fund their businesses will be able to start living a life better as an entrepeneur and are able to earn lots and gain tremendous exposure from their wealthy family background. These people are not entrepeneurs. And if they happened to be successful, then they will become the worst of human on earth. It is time for us to reflect what we have done over the years that we overlooked our local scene and talent. They are far off more better and talented than the foreign ones and it should be something to be proud about. Represent!::

Paper People products are conceptualized and manufactured with pride in Singapore. We differentiate our products from generic stationery by infusing different elements that inspire us (street art, couture fashion, graphic design) translate them into our design. Paper People integrates functionality with aesthetic appeal. We hope to inspire our users to explore their creativity and break away from "paper boredom". Paper People designed products are not just product but reflection of our culture.

Here at Paper People, we divide ourselves from the mundane A5 notebooks that we have all been forced to purchase from our local stationery stores. What differentiates our product is the way we infuse our hard or soft cover notebooks with different element designs that inspire us. Trends of street to the avant-garde couture. These covers tend to elicit a love ‘em or hate ‘em’ response. And unlike other expensive brands or imported notebooks, Paper People products are affordable yet it quality has not been compromised. :: IN ART WE TRUST ::

MAY DAY! MAY DAY! (Over & Done)

What do you get when you integrate a skateshop shop into a stationary boutique ? Well a totally out of the world concept. A lot of people have been telling me that skate stuff and books don't mix. The point of collaborating this 2 elements together is to work out something different. I understand that these skaters have always been portrayed as scum, vandals and menace to society. errmm... not for Boards & Stuff or in short, BNS. The owner; Zeeshaun Sheikh has taken this sport onto the next level. From "Go Skate Day" to DDC or Deck Design Competiton in conjunction of promoting a healthy lifestyle. They also carry cool brands like Etnies, Supra, Toy Machine and more. Come and view them now to find out more. You might even end up doing that fabulous flips and ollies while scribbling notes on your planners.
